VIKTOR IVASHKEVICH TO STAND TRIAL ON SEPT. 11

Criminal action against the editor-in-chief of the “Rabochy” newspaper Viktor
Ivashkevich will be considered on September 11 by the Pervomaisky district court
of Minsk. Ivashkevich is indicted for libel and defamation of president under
three articles of the Penal code. The journalist may face up to 5 years of jail,
reports Radio Ratsya.

COALITION IN DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS IN BELARUS CALLS ON US GOV. TO
EXERT PRESSURE ON OFFICIAL MINSK

The Coalition in Defense of Democracy and Human Rights in Belarus, uniting 12
Belarusian-American and 2 Belarusian-Canadian organizations in promoting democracy
and human rights in Belarus, passed the following statement on the occasion of
the first year of Lukashenko second tenure in office:

YAROSHUK FALLS PREY TO TRADE UNION CLEANSING

September 10 plenum of the Belarusian agricultural trade union dismissed Alexander
Yaroshuk from his post as head of the trade union. The assembly ruled to sack
Yaroshuk in connection with “the complete absence of understanding with the primary
trade union organizations and his political activism”. According to BelaPAN,
the plenary attracted some 50 members of the national committee of the agricultural
trade union. They blamed Yaroshuk over politicizing the organization and unwillingness
to hold dialogue with the state.

BELARUSIANS CONVINCED THEIR LOW LIVING STANDARD IS SECOND TO NONE

“Do you think Belarusians live better or worse than their neighbors?” - ordinary
Belarusians were asked by the “Zerkalo” pollsters of the BelaPAN information
company during the August 2002 poll. 500 respondents, aged 18 and over, answered
the questionnaire. Over half of them deem that Belarusians are living worse than
Poles (68%), Lithuanians (62%) and Latvians (60%).
